Bird Watching

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
Group email: Bird Watching group
When: On Thursday mornings
Monthly – 2nd Thursday – 10am

Our group comprises a relatively small number of birdwatching enthusiasts whose knowledge and expertise varies from relative newcomers to those with considerable experience. Ours is a very social group with members keen to learn more about the subject through a range of planned activities.
As birdwatchers in this region, we are also very fortunate to have access to a significant number of very good birdwatching sites, with the opportunity to observe a wide range of visiting and resident bird species throughout the year.
The group meets monthly throughout most of the year and its aim for the future is to continue to combine birdwatching visits to relatively local venues with opportunities to improve our bird identification skills through lectures and guided walks.
In the future it may be possible to expand the number of group activities to include visiting speakers as well as visits to more distant venues.
Our recent programme has included regular visits to the following locations:
• EWT Abberton Reservoir
• EWT Fingringhoe Wick
• EWT Hanningfield Reservoir
• Heybridge Basin

plus new destinations, such as RSPB Rye Meads and RSPB Minsmere, visited during 2025.

Each of our visits has been both successful and enjoyable with a significant range of bird species being recorded on each occasion.
Our collective bird identification skills have also improved, thanks mainly to the very interesting and informative Bird Song Identification talk, Wading Bird talk and associated guided walks provided by Liz Huxley at EWT Fingringhoe Wick, augmented by the excellent knowledge of other, more experienced birdwatchers who always seem to be very willing to share their knowledge with us ‘beginners’.
