The Church group visited St Giles Church in Great Maplestead on Monday 14th. The Church was built in 1100 probably on the site of a Pagan temple. The Norman building sits amongst magnificent old trees and has a peaceful churchyard. The church bells of which there are three dates from the 15th century and features a westerly facing clock. in 1626 the south transept was adapted to make the Deane or Dynes Chapel. In 1612 the tower and the west end of the building was stuck by lightning and repaired with red brick, rather than the flint of the original construction.
