Our August walk was from the Railway Museum in the parish of Wakes Colne to the neighbouring parish of Chappel a pretty village with a grand viaduct.
From the museum car park we set off on a glorious sunny morning.
With a slight incline to start, we crossed fields and meadows. After walking along Fair Maiden Walk we carefully crossed the rail track, and negotiated a wooden bridge. Then through the cornfield taking us to a quiet lane, passing Crows Hall on the way.
On reaching the main road we crossed, taking a wide footpath down to Old Hall farm and into the water meadows with a waterlily lake to our left.
At this point the Chappell village church and Wakes Colne Mill appeared and further on a splendid view of the viaduct. This grade 1 listed structure has 32 arches, taking trains 75 feet above
the Colne Valley.
On our return we drove the short distance to the Shoulder of Mutton, an antiques centre and tea room for lunch.
Our thanks to Pat Matthews for organising a superb walk.
